How This NZ KiwiSaver Calculator Works

This NZ KiwiSaver calculator estimates KiwiSaver contributions based on New Zealand rules for the 2025/26 financial year. It first converts all income types into an annual amount and then applies the selected employee contribution rate, employer contribution rate, and relevant tax rules.

Employer contributions are calculated after applying Employer Superannuation Contribution Tax (ESCT), and eligible members may also receive a government contribution. Results are displayed as annual figures and can be viewed as weekly, fortnightly, or monthly equivalents using the frequency tabs.

All values shown are estimates only, based on publicly available rules.

What Is KiwiSaver?

KiwiSaver is a voluntary, work-based savings scheme designed to help New Zealanders save for retirement. Contributions are typically made by employees and employers through payroll, with additional government support available for eligible members.

KiwiSaver contributions are calculated as a percentage of gross income and are usually deducted automatically for salaried and waged employees.

Employee KiwiSaver Contributions (2025/26)

Employees can choose to contribute a percentage of their gross income to KiwiSaver. Common employee contribution rates include:

  • 3%
  • 4%
  • 6%
  • 8%
  • 10%

This calculator multiplies your annualised income by the selected contribution rate to estimate your total annual employee contribution.

Employer KiwiSaver Contributions and ESCT

Employers are required to contribute a minimum of 3% of an eligible employee’s gross income to KiwiSaver. These employer contributions are subject to Employer Superannuation Contribution Tax (ESCT), which is deducted before the contribution is credited to the employee’s KiwiSaver account.

Important: ESCT Is Not PAYE

ESCT is separate from personal income tax (PAYE). While PAYE tax thresholds have changed in recent years, ESCT uses its own income bands and was not aligned with those PAYE changes. As a result, ESCT rates for KiwiSaver employer contributions remain unchanged for the 2025/26 year.

ESCT Rates for 2025/26

The ESCT rate is determined by an employee’s total annual income:

  • Up to $16,80010.5%
  • $16,801 to $57,60017.5%
  • $57,601 to $84,00030%
  • Over $84,00033%

This calculator automatically applies the correct ESCT rate and shows the net employer contribution after ESCT.

Government KiwiSaver Contribution (2025/26)

Eligible KiwiSaver members may receive a government contribution based on their own contributions during the year.

For the 2025/26 year:

  • The government contributes 25 cents for every $1 contributed by the member
  • The maximum government contribution is $260.72 per year
  • Members earning over $180,000 annually are not eligible

The calculator applies the government contribution cap automatically and disables the government contribution option when income exceeds the eligibility threshold.

Income Types Supported

This NZ KiwiSaver calculator supports multiple income types:

  • Annual salary
  • Monthly income
